MACHINES AND TOOLS

Plastic welding tools and equipment will vary quite a bit depending on the type of welding you need to do, and the type of plastic you are welding

Plastic welding is not often thought of, but more and more often these days industry finds needs to join together plastic parts, and not all plastics will connect with others using standard adhesives.  That leaves a choice of mechanical fasteners and plastic welding, using plastic welding tools and equipment.  To choose the right plastic welding tools and equipment a person must know the application they are working on, the kind of assembly you are doing, and the type of materials.  Plastics have different make-ups, difference chemical structures, and other variables.  To get a good bond you need to know these things.

One of the first plastic welding tools and equipment choices to make is cleaning equipment and tools, including solvents.  The area to be welded must be clean, and sandpaper should not be used because the dust is hard to get rid of and will cause a weak bond.  Use solvents carefully and sparingly.

On different jobs choose the method of plastic welding you will do.  Will it be hot gas welding, contact welding, hot plate welding, high frequency welding, ultra sonic welding, laser welding, spin welding or vibration or friction welding?  Each method requires different plastic welding tools and equipment.

As you can see, plastic welding tools and equipment can be quite varied.  It is common however for a good choice of plastic welding tools and equipment, in the tool kit of a plastic welding professional, to include: a heat gun, hot air process heating systems, hot air blowers, other heat sources, electric heating elements, and plastic extrusion welders.  If involved in ultra sonic welding of plastics, the plastic welding tools and equipment will undoubtedly include a full ultra sonic welding device, which includes an ultra sonic transducer system and a pneumatic actuator to provide welding force.  This kit will also include an anvil or a fixture for holding work pieces.  Parts of the transducer system include a sonotrode, a high-tensile threaded pin, a height adjustment piece, a converter, an oscillating disk, and a booster.

A very important part of a plastic welding tools and equipment kit for ultrasonic welding applications will be the amplitude gage.  Correct and consistent amplitude is an important factor to achieve a fine quality weld using the ultra sonic metric.  With amplitude gage measuring and setting the amplitude is not difficult.  It is used in conjunction with the ultrasonic horn, and will allow a reading o f the total amplitude in microns.

A hydraulic decelerator is also important.  A hydraulic decelerator minimizes bent posts and damage that occurs when working with small parts, by slowing horn descent to allow proper melting.

Laser welding is most known for use in welding of jewelry items, and in engraving metals, but is also used in plastic welding.   As you can see, the proper plastic welding tools and equipment can vary depending on the type of plastic you are welding.
